Once you've started on the happy journey
of improving your health, if you're keen to add additional approaches,
there are
definitely lots of other great books, courses, practitioners and other
sources of help out there. Below are some that Jessica and/or her
patients have found particularly useful. This
page includes:

Please note that
Jessica can't accept any liability for your experience with these
practitioners, courses, books, etc! And worry not, Jessica
receives no financial gain for recommending them, just good karma.
The exceptions are the amazon links, where Jessica receives a small
percentage on your purchases, which are at amazon's usual prices.
More about acupuncture
|
Jessica is a member of the
British Acupuncture Council.
She studied
at the
College of Integrated Chinese
Medicine.
Angela Hicks is one of
the founders of that college, and a very wise and lovely
lady, Her book "The Acupuncture Handbook" give a
great overview of what acupuncture's all about.
Michael
Reed Gach's book "Acupressure" gives simple self-help
techniques for all kinds of things, from asthma to
constipation to hangovers.

Musculo-skeletal problems
|
Many musculo-skeletal
problems are much helped by acupuncture, and it can also
combine very successfully with osteopathy. Jessica
doesn't have a particular osteopath to recommend, but she
was very impressed with the treatment she received some
years ago at the British School of Osteopathy. If you
find a good osteopath in the Waterloo area, do let Jessica
know!

Jessica is also
really impressed with Sue Glasgow's deep tissue massage
treatments. Sue's helped Jessica with some back
problems: "My lower back feels so much looser now and much
more flexible when I walk. I'm really surprised at what
Sue's been able to do for me, I hadn't realised massage
could make such a powerful and lasting difference."

Tai Chi and Yoga
Meditation
|
After
about 20 years, Jessica has finally established a regular
meditation practice after attending a two day course run by
ACEM. It's is a Swedish organisation teaching a simple
non-religious form of mediation.

Alternatively, Paul Wilson's
book 'The Quiet' does a great job of demystifying
meditation, and taking you through a range of different
styles so that you can find one that works really well for
you.
And for those with
limited time and patience, Martin Boroson's book "The One
Moment Master" is a great 'instant meditation' book, all
about cultivating contentment right here and right now! |

Working with diet and food
|
Chinese
dietary recommendations are often not obvious from our
Western ideas about the properties of different foods!
Jessica hasn't found the perfect book to recommend on this
subject, but "Helping Ourselves" by Daverick Leggett has a
good overview of using foods to help with various
imbalances. Unfortunately amazon has it on 4-6 week
order, if you find it anywhere quicker do let Jessica know!
Meanwhile naturopathy is a great
complement to acupuncture treatment, and Philip Weeks is a
great practitioner. Naturopathy involves using
diet, herbs, and detox regimes to cleanse and strengthen
your system, in a bespoke prescription for your individual
health.

Acupressure in childbirth
|

New Zealand acupuncturist and midwife who's written a
wonderful book on acupuncture in pregnancy and childbirth.
She has a great online leaflet on acupressure techniques for
easing labour and breastfeeding, with diagrams and
instructions for suitable points. |

Using counselling
|
Acupuncture can do wonders for
improving our emotional wellbeing. Jessica may have
discussed with you the importance of expressing your
emotions freely and asserting yourself appropriately, to
support your physical and emotional health. If this is
a particular area of challenge for you, Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy can be a great additional help in exploring
techniques to put this into practice. |

Our
relationships also tend to provide challenges from time to
time.
Spending some time together with a skilled third party can be really
helpful in ironing out any bad habits we may have crept
into. People often think of relationship counselling
as only for relationships which are struggling, but where
your relationship is already good, this can be a way of
working towards it being great. |

A healthy home
|
Feng Shui may not seem like an
obvious 'health' recommendation, but often our homes offer a
strong reflection and reinforcement of how we are.
Making shifts in our environment can can help shift blocks
in our lives and our health. Lynne's a warm and wise
lady and her starting point is to ask what changes you would
like to make in your life. |

Personal transformation
|
There
are all kinds of personal development courses out
there, and Jessica was really impressed with a ten
day course she went on in October 2006.
Satvatove's 'foundational' and 'advanced' seminars
are ideally taken together and include all kinds of
skills development around communication and conflict
resolution, plus exercises to clear emotional
blocks, become clear about what you want out of
life, and embark on personal transformation.
This kind of intensive personal development is not
without its risks so it's worth re-iterating that
Jessica definitely can't take responsibility for
your experience of it!
Their
coaching is also great, and they offer a free
'taster' coaching session, which is probably a good
way to get started. |

Spiritual healing
|
And,
getting a little further 'out there,' Jessica has
found working with Molly Fairley, a spiritual
healer, a powerful experience. When emotional
blocks seem really immovable, Molly may be able to
help. She runs workshops and does telephone
consultations. |

More great acupuncturists
|
Colleagues who Jessica
can particularly recommend include:
Kerry Marshall,
who practices in Covent
Garden, Brick Lane and Earlsfield. Kerry and Jessica
studied acupuncture together.
Giles Davies,
who practices in East
Dulwich. He's the acupuncturist who
Jessica sees for treatment herself.
